The mini shetties
July 2017
New Horselife was on a case with some ponies walking in miserable conditions, in a field where there was no more grass, there was also no water or any kind of roughage.
They all had very long hooves, and some already had beginner trunks, where we could estimate that they had not had a blacksmith for several years.
One pony had a very bad eye, and the owner says that at one point it had got a lollipop from a candy cane in the eye, and also states that there were many problems with that eye. Nor was it our impression that it had been inspected or treated by a veterinarian.
The fjordhorse had a small slit over the rim of the left foreleg, which was not treated either.
We tried to have a dialogue with the owner, that the ponies was in desperate need of a blacksmith to cut off all the ponies’ hooves, but the owner was not interested, as the owner felt that it would be impossebly to get hold of a ferrie to do the ponies, and that the hoofs could not be proper done with just one cut.
It ended up with the owner asking us to leave his property and if there was more hassle, the owner could then pick up his rifle and shoot all the ponies while we watched.
The case was then reported to the police.
After the owner had a visited by the police and he chose to hand over his ponies to New Horse life and they arrived late July.
And here begins the very large and pervasive treatment of the poor ponies.
Treatment
The first to treat was NH Freja, as her eye was just completely broken and we could see no other possible than to contact equine hospital immediately. Freja is quickly transported to the equine hospital, where they quickly assess that the eye simply cannot be saved and therefore they had to remove the eye completely. Freja is then admitted to surgery.
Freja’s operation went well and she was discharged again after a few days. Back to New Horselife Freja now had to get used to a whole new life without the right eye, without more pain, and at the same time in a whole new environment.
Today NH Freja has recovered very well on the operation and has also become accustomed to her hooves being arranged so that she can now also walk properly without pain. Freja has become a really happy little pony, who enjoys being cuddled, and she has even been lucky enough to find a new foster family in East Jutland.
Pruning of hooves
When we received the ponies at New Horselife, we should have ordered the blacksmith to get all the ponies’ hooves cut as soon as possible. The ponies could hardly walk, because of the many pains that come as a nuisance to such hooves.
All the Ponies have been through a thorough pruning and it has obviously been a bit of a upheaval for them that they have to get used to being able to start moving and walking normally and even take a real troot and enjoy life again without pain and discomfort .
The worst was with NH Karoline, as she was the one with the worst worst hooves we have had on site. For a long time there was doubt as to whether she would make it and we worked closely with both the blacksmith and the veterinarian. She had been crooked on her legs due to the clenching needs and might have lasting pain after that.As time went by, things started to get better and Karoline is now completely free and clean without pain.
